Tina on Marriage and People with Disabilities

Listen to this story:

I was a very lucky person at the ripe old age of 23.And I met my perfect match, who happened to be another guy with cerebral palsy. We married.I was 24.He was 27.We got a lot of pushback, a ton of pushback from people in the community. What are you doing that for? Live together. You’ll get more money.  My comment was, “you don’t know our parents.” “We’re doing this the right way.” And a lot of comments about how we couldn’t be a husband and a wife to each other because of our inabilities. People telling me, oh, don’t marry Rick. He’s so much more dependent. You’ll end up being his caretaker, not his wife. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.Yeah, at some points I was his caretaker, but that was okay.I was totally ready for that.
