Listen to this story:
About six months into our marriage, Rick decides to tell me that he feels like he’s getting old. If we’re going to have a family, now is the time. So I go and do all the preparatory things, and we just weren’t getting pregnant.
So about a year into the situation, I go to my OBGYN and I say, we’re not getting pregnant. I don’t know what’s wrong. So she gives me pills and things, and that doesn’t work. Now all this time, I’m in graduate school to be a social worker. So we got multiple things going on around here.
I happen to take a genetics course, and we talk about infertility. And my teacher gives me some names of some people who are infertility specialists. I should check them out.
The first person I check out was the most god awful human being ever. She looked at me and told me, in my country, we bash babies heads against rocks that are like you. Yeah, that was the first and last appointment.
I probably went through three or four different people until I found somebody who actually was open to the suggestion that we should get a work up and that this was an okay thing to do. We ended up traveling to Utica, New York, to find that person. Fought with Medicaid transportation the whole way. Fought with Medicaid the whole way. But, yeah, I mean, nobody was interested in the little disabled couple who they thought it was real cute, wanted to have babies.
Eventually, Medicaid cut off the transportation, and I didn’t get to be a mom, but I mom everybody else.
