Kathleen on Shame-based Sex Education

Listen to this story:

They talked a lot about making sure that you’re emotionally ready for sex, which is like, okay, fine. But they didn’t really talk about it at all outside of the context of a marriage. And the reality is that most people are probably not going to wait until they’re married and not everybody is going to get married. I think as I just brought up, in the case of a lot of people with disabilities, we can’t get legally married.

I remember feeling like something is off here and we watched these videos with a speaker called Pam Stenzel and looking back, I remember feeling like the videos were weird and out of place for a public school and very religious undertones, kind of very low key, slut, shamey kind of thing. But I was little so I was just kind of like, this seems weird, but okay. And I looked her up recently as an adult and she really is like right wing religious type person that has very much focused on an anti premarital sex, antiabortion kind of agenda. And I was really kind of surprised as an older person that that ever made its way into a public school. And it’s not like I was living in the Deep South either.

We were just hanging out in New York suburbia and I guess I remember feeling like the whole thing was strange, but I didn’t realize how strange it actually was until later. And then as far as their complete failure to mention disability stuff, it was disappointing but not surprising because my educational setting failed in every way as far as being disability inclusive. But like I said, I think it would have had to be incorporated very thoughtfully. So it wasn’t just like, this is the disability section where everybody turns around and then looks at the only noticeably disabled person in the room. And I don’t think the people who worked at my school at the time probably had the skills to incorporate it in a thoughtful way.

I hope that we’re moving in that direction now, but we certainly were not back in 2005, 2006.
