What Is It?
The vagina is the body part that connects the vulva with the cervix and uterus. It has the largest opening in the vulva. It is where menstrual fluid leaves the body. It is also where a baby could come out during childbirth.
The vagina is also a place where sexual penetration can happen.
Some people experience pleasure in different parts of the vagina including the top of the vagina (the g-spot), towards the back of the vagina, around the entrance of the vagina, or the sides (or walls) of the vagina.
An Example
Zara learned that the vagina and the vulva are different parts of the body. The vulva is outside the body and includes the opening of the vagina. The vagina is inside the body.
What to Know
Every glossary word connects to different parts of the Sexuality Wheel. Explore the information below to learn more.
- Many people think that the vagina is where pee comes out of, but this is not true. The urethra is where pee leaves the body.
- The vagina is stretchy and can expand in size. However, this process is not immediate. The body needs time to become aroused for the vagina to stretch and become lubricated enough for fingers, a penis, or a sex toy to comfortably enter the inside of the vagina.
- Sometimes people have vaginal conditions such as vaginismus which can cause extreme tightness in the vaginal muscles and vaginal opening. A pelvic pain doctor may be able to provide supportive health care.
- It is also important that there is consent before and during any sexual activities. Sexual activity without consent is not sex. It is violence.
- The vagina will often release a natural discharge or fluid that a person might see in their underwear. This fluid is a way to keep the vagina clean. However, if the fluid from the vagina is yellow or greenish, or if it has a strong bad odor, or if there is burning or irritation, there could be an infection. Connect with a health care provider for help immediately.
