What Is It?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP is a medication that people who do not have HIV can take before having sex with someone (such as a romantic partner) who has HIV. This medication can protect the person without HIV from getting HIV.
An Example
Laura and Doug are in a committed romantic relationship. Doug takes PrEP because Laura has HIV and Doug does not have HIV. PrEP helps Doug avoid getting HIV when he has sex with Laura. They also use condoms when they have sex to prevent the transmission of STIs and HIV.
